Reference of special terms about “Jinja”, shrines（神社用語の説明）
Ichinomiya(一ノ宮)
The top shrine in a certain area in Japan.
《一ノ宮とは》
一ノ宮とは、
昔の日本の地理でその地域で一番格式が高い神社のこと。
全国の都道府県にその地域の一宮があり、
それぞれ長い歴史があります。
Goshintai(御神体)
The object which gods and goddesses live in. There are many kinds of “Goshintai.” such as swords, mirrors and natural objects such as mountains, waterfalls and boulders.
《御神体とは》
御神体とは、神様が宿る物のこと。
日本の歴史や神話、それぞれの神社によって、
鏡・剣などの場合や、山・滝・石などの自然の場合もあります。
Kami-no-tsukai(神の使い)
They are gods’ and goddesses’ slave animals. They convey gods’ and goddesses’ feelings, thoughts and messages to people. The kinds of those slave animals are birds, cows, monkeys. Frogs and snakes also can be slave animals.
《神の使いとは》
神様の意思を伝えてくれる動物。
日本の歴史や神話、それぞれの神社によって、
カラス・ハトなどの鳥類や牛・サルなどの哺乳類、
カエル・蛇などの爬虫類の場合もあります。
Cho-zu-ya(手水舎)
The place located near the entrance of shrines. People purify their body and soul by rinsing their hands and mouth there. The way of purification is like this.
1. Take one of the wooden dippers provided with your hand and rinse your left hand.
2. Rinse your right hand with left.
3. Pour a little water into your left cupped palm and rinse your mouth.
4. Spit the water into the ditch surrounding the fountain. Do not drink from the dipper and do not swallow the water.
5. Hold it vertically so the water runs down the handle.
6. Place it back to the original position. You are now purified and ready to enter the shrine.
《ATTENTION 1》
You must scoop up water from the water fountain only once. So please do all the procedures with one scoop.
《ATTENTION 2》
As for step 3, your lips must not touch the dipper when you rinse your mouth.
《手水舎とは》
神社を参拝する前に、
手や口をすすいで身を清める場所のこと。
以下の手順で行いましょう。
＊注意事項＊
水は何度も汲まず、
一度汲んだ水で、
すべての手順を終わらせるようにしましょう。
また⑤の口をすすぐ際は、
直接柄杓に口をつけてはいけません。
手の中に水を貯めて、口の中に水を入れてくださいね。
①右手に柄杓を持ち、水を汲む
②左手に水をかけて、左手に持ち替える
④右手に水をかけて、右手に持ち替える
⑤左手の中に水をため、口に少し入れて吐き出す
⑥左手に水をかける
⑦柄杓の持っている絵の部分に水をかける
Torii(鳥居)
Torii is a shrine gate. The place beyond “Torii” is a holy place.
《鳥居とは》
神社の入り口の門。
鳥居の中は、神様が住む聖域です。
Sessha and Massha(摂社＆末社)
They are smaller shrines inside of the area of the main shrine. Gods and goddesses related to the main gods and goddesses of the shrine live in those smaller shrines.

《摂社末社とは》
神社の境内やその付近にある、小さめの神社。
本社に祀られている神様に関係する神様が祀られています。
